Ice cream infused with different spices is a dream come true for Malai Ice Cream owner Pooja Bavishi.
"I made my first cheesecake at 10 years old and knew at that point. I made this connection that desserts make people happy," Bavishi says. "I really just wanted to continue that."
After business school, Bavishi started Malai Ice Cream. The word translates to cream, but is often used figuratively as cream of the crop.
Malai Ice Cream can be found at Gotham Market at Ashland and Smorgasburg.
Bavishi says she grew up in North Carolina with parents who are both from India. She says it was that upbringing that inspired most of the flavors, including rose with cinnamon, golden turmeric and masala chai. These flavors and more can be tried at the Gotham Market at Ashland.
"We'll be there until Nov. 1. It's our first retail outpost," she says. "It's a pop-up but we're really excited to be there with other Brooklyn-based businesses."
Bavishi says she would eventually like to open a brick and mortar shop for Malai.
