Friends and family members said their final goodbyes Tuesday to a Department of Environmental Protection worker who was crushed to death at a Brooklyn sewage treatment plant last week.
Dozens of DEP employees lined up outside St. Ephraim Catholic Church to pay their last respects to Gennaro Montello, who died at Owl?s Head water waste treatment plant. Montello was crushed by a falling steel pipe while moving a temporary conveyor belt with a group of his co-workers.
?He loved life, he wasn?t materialistic at all,? says family friend Joann Vasta.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg delivered a eulogy after the funeral Mass, saying the city is grateful for Montello?s service. For the duration of the day, all flags on city buildings will be flying at half-staff in Montello?s honor.
Montello is survived by his wife and two children.
