Mourners turned out Wednesday for the funeral of an emotionally unstable 32-year-old man shot and killed by police in his own home last month.

Miguel Gonzalez, an officer responding to the home, shot and killed Dwayne Jeune after the latter's mother called for help on July 31, according to authorities.

The family says Jeune was usually nonviolent, but police say he tackled Gonzalez and was holding a knife. According to authorities, the officer first discharged a Taser, but it failed to stop Jeune's advance.

Gonzalez was also part of another police-involved shooting last year, according to sources.

Jeune's family is calling for an independent investigation into the slaying. Relatives also say police should be better trained to respond to calls about emotionally disturbed people.

Family members remember Jeune as a sweet, soft-spoken and well-mannered man, they say. He was fond of music, reading and sports and often ran errands for his parents. He was the only one of their seven children who immigrated with them to the United States from Guyana in 2003.
