There may be hope after all for education at Bishop Kearney High School in Brooklyn, however not as an all-girls school.

 Councilman Justin Brannan and state Sen. Andrew Gounardes wrote a letter to the mayor and schools chancellor urging them to open a new specialized high school at the site of the closing Catholic school.

In May, it was announced that Bishop Kearney would be closing due to low enrollment. Brannan and Gounardes say opening a new school would allow more students to attend one of the city's elite public schools.

Last year, only 17 percent of applicants were offered admission.

The Department of Education told News 12 that it is reviewing the letter.

The Diocese of Brooklyn says it's in the process of vacating the building, but doesn't have plans for its future.
