Gov. Kathy Hochul announces new subway safety initiative

Working alongside the NYPD, officials aim to place an officer on ever subway overnight, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.

In her State of the State address, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the steps she will be taking to combat violence in city subways.
She said the plan will post 750 NYPD officers at stations across the city. She noted an additional 300 officers will be physically inside subway cars.
Working alongside the NYPD, officials aim to place an officer on ever subway overnight, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.
The plan included the installation of subway platform protective barriers at more than 100 subway stations. The governor says she hopes the barriers will protect riders from being pushed onto the tracks.
