Dozens of workers turned wooden planks into window frames Saturday at the future site of Habitat for Humanity?s largest project in Brownsville.
A crew of real estate broker who work for the city?s top-name firms make up Brokers Build. The group has raised $1 million to underwrite 11 apartments, which will help future residents secure a spot in one of 41 units that will be a three-building complex.
"We?re selling multi-million dollar condominiums. It?s time for us to take a step back and give back,? said broker Stan Ponte.
Once complete, the complex will house one, two and three-bedroom apartments, costing up to $160,000. The units will also feature energy-efficient amenities, saving tenants up to at least 30 percent on their bills.
Habitat for Humanity officials say the complex should be finished by January 2009.
