Thousands of Haitian immigrants could soon lose their temporary protected status.

The United States Supreme Court is expected to decide this summer whether the Trump administration can strip them of the benefit, which protects immigrants from certain countries from deportation while granting them permission to work.

As many Haitian immigrants work in health care, advocates say the outcome could have major consequences for home care workers and patients who rely on them.

"When you do that to them, you are doing it to your loved ones because they suffer, if not more than our immigrants do," said Mildred Garcia-Gallery, a local home care consultant, "because without our immigrants, people die. That is the reality."

Supporters are also demanding fair wages and labor protections for home care workers.
