Police say an 18-year-old man drowned at the beach in Coney Island on Wednesday.
Police say units responded around 3:10 p.m. to the beach on the same block as the Cyclone where lifeguards pulled 18-year-old Jun Obas out of the water. He was unconscious and unresponsive, but still alive.
They say Obas was taken to Coney Island Hospital where he later died.
News 12 spoke with beachgoers like Andrea DiGregorio, saddened by the news.
"That's unbelievable, he had all the life in front of him," said DiGregorio.
New York City Parks says it was the second drowning at a New York City beach this summer that parks has responded to. News 12 spoke with beachgoers like Lamar Robinson who said it's a reminder to practice beach safety.
“Stay in groups and be connected with each other because it's very dangerous. I think that that's what you got to do," said Robinson.
Sources close to the investigation say Obas may have suffered a medical episode prior to the drowning and that he was pulled in approximately 2 feet of water, but a medical examiner is still working to determine an official cause of death.
