Prosecutors say a Hicksville man was driving a stolen car when he crashed it and killed a South Farmingdale man. He then left the scene before police arrested him.
The family of the 80-year-old victim Peter Morris came to court Saturday for the suspect's arraignment.
They were crying as they left the courthouse.
The son spoke to News 12 briefly, saying they all miss his father and are heartbroken.
Prosecutors say 24-year-old Randy Colon stole a car Friday morning. He was driving without a license and speeding in a school zone when he crashed into Morris's parked car while Morris was inside.
In court, prosecutors said Colon hit Morris's car so hard he forced it across the grass, slamming it into another parked car.
Witnesses, including a corrections officer, told News 12 they ran to help.
News 12 was told Colon then took off on foot.
Police later caught Colon and arrested him near the scene of the crash.
"We're a very close community here in Farmingdale so everybody is very upset," said resident Nicolette Morelli.
Morris had just spoken at his 9-year-old granddaughter's school at Woodward Park Elementary in South Farmingdale at an event honoring veterans.
He was just getting into his car when he was hit and killed.
"And a veteran right before Veterans Day, can you imagine," Morelli said.
Prosecutors say Colon has a history of mental illness and told police he did not take his medication the day of the crash.
Colon is charged with manslaughter, criminal possession of stolen property, grand larceny, and leaving the scene of an incident resulting in death.
The judge ordered he be held without bail.
Morris' family and friends held a small vigil outside the scene of the crash Saturday night.
His daughter and grandson told News 12 they will remember his passion for storytelling and how much he cherishes family.
