Hundreds of New Yorkers took part in this year's Way of the Cross celebration Friday.
The tradition, which involves carrying a wooden cross from St. James Cathedral Basilica and across the Brooklyn Bridge, is an act of devotion commemorating Christ's passion, church officials say.
The tradition began in 1996 with just 30 people participating.
Today's participants were joined by Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio from the Diocese of Brooklyn.
Church leaders say in light of recent tragedies around the world, showing faith and support to one another is important.
The group also made a stop at Ground Zero to pray for those lost.
