Hundreds of 12- to 15-year-old students in the Bronx are already getting vaccinated after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory panel recommended the use of the Pfizer vaccine for that age group.
SAR Academy in Riverdale used its gym to help hundreds of sixth through 10th graders receive their first dose on Thursday.
The school was the first in the city to shut down after a confirmed coronavirus case was reported last year.
The vaccines were approved or adolescents on Wednesday afternoon and the school says they were anticipating the approval.
After closely working with a pharmacy, the school immediately received 300 doses with all appointments signed up in two and a half hours. In less than 24 hours, students began to get vaccinated.
Students say they are relieved and can’t wait to be in each others' presence without masks. They will be back in three weeks to get their second doses.
