Immigrants are creating more jobs and businesses in formerly listless neighborhoods like Sunset Park, according to a new study.
The Center for an Urban Future found immigrants are critical to growth in major U.S. cities. The study points to the need for revitalization in post-9/11 New York City due to economic hardship. Brooklyn has seen almost a 50 percent increase in new businesses from 1994 to 2004, according to the study. The center credits immigrants' entrepreneurial spirit for the turnaround, saying they are doing more for some local economies than U.S. citizens.
The study also found cities have done a poor job including immigrant businesses in overall economic planning. Experts feel Sunset Park will need a new high school to keep up with the growth.
