The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is warning people against tax scams as the deadline to file draws close.
The IRS released its annual list of the most common ways taxpayers cheat the system...and get cheated. Topping the list of a dozen common pitfalls is identity theft. The public is advised to beware of unsolicited emails and be careful of who has access to any personal information, including tax preparers.
The IRS is also warning taxpayers not to file false returns, lie about your income or exaggerate donations. Those mistakes could cost you more money in penalties and even criminal charges.
