The "Jail Is Not An Option" event was held at P.S. 309 on Saturday. Organizer Tina Booker says she hopes to help kids succeed and stay out of trouble through sports, free school supplies and lots of encouragement.
The event is part of a bigger organization Booker started called Radikal 4 Kidz, which is based out of P.S. 271. The organization offers weekend classes including arts, dance and journalism.
Booker says she was inspired by her career as a corrections officer. She wants to stop the vicious cycle of kids in her neighborhood going to jail.
The next big event Booker is going to organize is the "Holiday Extravaganza" around Christmastime, where kids will show off all they learned in their weekend classes.
