A young girl who is preparing her acceptance as a woman in the Jewish community decided to help others to mark the occasion of her bat mitzvah.
“For my bat mitzvah project, I decided to help and give back to the community,” said Leora Nachman.
Nachman is packaging challah ingredients for people who can’t afford it, and hopes to help 1,000 people.

She raised money for the past month, and even got help from kosher.com, the company that matched the donations with 500 more packages.
Her mother said this wasn’t her daughter’s first time giving back to the community.

“Leora has come with me many times over the last few years to actually come down to Masbia to volunteer in the soup kitchen we've handed out food. We've volunteered at Union Square farmers market,” said Naomi Nachman.

Nachman brought some of her friends to the Masbia Food Kitchen in Flatbush to help her package the goods.
“It's not only just about the community, but it's also to teach the kids that having a bat mitzvah or other celebrations, it’s not just about themselves, it's about giving back to the community,” Nachman said.

Nachman and her friends will finish the packages during her bat mitzvah. She said she is still collecting money to make more kits and added that for just an $8 donation, she can give to another family.
