Kings County Hospital unveiled its new, high-tech cancer-treating equipment Tuesday.
The state-of-the-art linear accelerator, often referred to as a LINAC, can better target cancer cells during treatment, which spares damage to surrounding tissue. Because the LINAC is more precise, doctors can use higher radiation dosages without as many adverse side effects.
The machine also decreases the length of time patients must undergo radiation therapy.
Some cancer patients have had to travel long distances for LINAC treatments, but now they have a local option.
It's not the hospital's first LINAC machine, but the new one is far more advanced than older equipment.
Hospital workers say the machine is expected to treat nearly 200 cancer patients every year.
