November is Puerto Rican Heritage Month and Latin theater Pregones in the Bronx is debuting its first full stage musical ensemble since the start of the pandemic.
The stage is now set for a long-awaited performance at the Pregones Theater. News 12 caught up with the cast during rehearsals for the theater's newest stage production called Torched. It's the first stage production after nearly two years since the pandemic. Artistic Director Rosalba Rolon says she is excited to bring back a full-scale ensemble for audiences.
Torched brings viewers back to the turbulent era of the 1970s in the South Bronx where neighborhood blocks were ravaged by abandoned lots filled with rubble and burnt-out buildings. Rolon says the play delves deeper into the crisis.
Meanwhile, the troupe says to be able to reconnect to the community on stage, especially during Puerto Rican Heritage Month, is special.
Since 1979, Pregones Theater has been bringing to life generations stories of Puerto Ricans and Latin/Caribbean people. The theater is credited for nurturing the development of hundreds of Latino artists, many of them from the Bronx.
Some of the shows, which are a multi-generational production, have been seen in more than 500 cities and 19 countries.
The Pregones Theater's opening night in the Bronx debuts on Dec. 2 on Walton Avenue.
