Leaders call on youth to put guns down after 16-year-old critically injured in Canarsie shooting
Religious leaders gathered to denounce violence Monday after a shooting left a 16-year-old boy in critical condition in Canarsie last week.
The teenage boy, identified as Oliver, was shot on Feb. 23.
The shooting hits close to home for Brooklyn Councilwoman Farah Louis, who says Oliver is her cousin.
"I knew that someday I would get a call that someone that I know would be shot,” said Louis.
Oliver is sedated and in critical condition, according to the family. The prayer vigil held Monday called on the youth to put their guns down.
They say there are too many victims of gun violence in Canarsie.
Police say they are looking for two suspects who ran away along Flatlands Avenue right after the shooting at around 11 a.m. on Feb. 23.
They say Oliver walked into a Popeyes restaurant to call 911 and was rushed to Brookdale Medical Center.
