The power is back on Wednesday at a Coney Island housing complex after thousands of tenants spent the night in the cold and dark.
The five buildings of the Amalgamated Warbasse Houses lost electricity around 11 p.m. Tuesday. Tenants were forced to go without heat, lights or phone service. Some residents had to walk up and down many flights of stairs in the high-rise buildings because elevators were out. Power was restored around 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Management at the complex blames the blackout on a glitch in a new computerized boiler system.
Residents say they're shocked a blackout occurred at the complex because it has its own power plant. The buildings were some of the only ones to have electricity during the 2003 blackout that crippled the city.
