The spike in gun violence is an issue New York City is facing, prompting local leaders and police to call for an end to widespread gun violence across New York City.
According to city data, victims are up more than 13% from last year. Over the weekend, eleven people were shot around the city, and that's just from two incidents.
In Canarsie, on 81st Street, police say 32-year-old Irvin Monroe was fatally shot on Sunday. His killers are still on the loose. This all comes on the heels of a mass shooting in Queens over the weekend in which ten people were injured.
Police say the mass shooting was a gang-related shooting. Police believe that three of the victims are members of the gang the Trinitarios.
New York City mayoral candidates Curtis Sliwa and Eric Adams say the crime has to stop.
Sliwa says gang units are the answer, and Adams adds the city needs a joint gangs and guns task force with federal, state and city coordination to stop the flow of guns.
