Local leaders are calling for action to prevent gun violence after two teens were shot Monday night outside an Applebee's in Downtown Brooklyn.

Police say 16-year-old Armani Hankins, of Queens, was shot in the head just after 6 p.m. and pronounced dead at Brooklyn Hospital.

They say emergency workers also transported an 18-year-old to New York Methodist Hospital where he is in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Witnesses say they saw a group fighting when the shots rang out.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and City Council Member Laurie Cumbo are asking for more after-school programs to get young people off the streets, as well as increased police presence in the area.

Adams also called on local businesses to get involved and help fund those after-school programs.

Residents say they want an increased police presence in the area. They say the many restaurants and shopping locations draw people from across the city, which can sometimes lead to conflicts or violence.

Police have not yet made any arrests in this case, and the investigation is ongoing.
