Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn held a reception on Wednesday to thank volunteers for their dedication and incredible work in the community.

The extra-special honoree for the reception was 91-year-old Margot Loewenstein, who spends three days a week volunteering at the medical center.

“I just feel you should give back,” said Loewenstein. “It’s also good for me to be involved with other people rather than just to sit at home.”

Lowenstein started off pushing the refreshment cart for hospital visitors over 30 years ago, and now her volunteer work expands across the entire hospital’s operations.

“She takes pride in her work and it shows,” said Beatrice Egrovich, administrator of Maimonides Medical Center. “She comes in and she smiles and says good morning… she’s just full of sunshine.”

Lowenstein and her family fled from Germany to the United States in 1938 in fear of being sent to concentration camps. She credits her connection to the Holocaust as something that pushes her to give back.
