A Mamaroneck couple says a powerful electrical surge caused approximately $4,000 in damage to their home earlier this year, leaving them frustrated after they say Con Edison denied their reimbursement claim.

Charles and Lydia Hassan say the power surge occurred on April 18 while they were at home.

According to the couple, every light and electrical appliance in the house suddenly switched on at once, signaling what they describe as an extreme power surge.

Charles Hassan said he immediately shut off power to the home and contacted both 911 and Con Edison to report the issue.

While temporary power was restored shortly afterward, the aftermath of the surge lasted for weeks.

Utility crews eventually dug up a portion of their lawn and street and replaced electrical wiring as part of the repair process.

The Hassans say several household systems and appliances were damaged, including a heating relay and pump and a dehumidifier.

In total, they estimate the damage at roughly $4,000.

After submitting a claim for reimbursement, the couple says Con Edison denied their request.

“Just cover it. They’re a service company. We’re the service and it’s not like we have a choice,” said Lydia Hassan.

In response, a Con Edison spokesperson said the utility follows state-approved guidelines when evaluating reimbursement claims:

“The utility’s claims reimbursement decisions are governed by state-approved rules that Con Edison follows closely,” the spokesperson said. “Those rules exist to make sure Con Edison’s reimbursements are fair to those who submit claims and to all of its other customers."
