Police arrested 31-year-old Josny Jean for stabbing 70-year-old Frederick Howard multiple times on Monday at his home on East 87th Street.
Neighbors said Howard lived in the basement apartment of the three-family home and helped with maintenance and housework. They say there has been tension between Howard and Jean, including disputes about Jean’s dog.
“The guy is just a bully to the old man,” neighbor Quinn told News 12.
Two neighbors said Howard went to the police last week to file a harassment complaint against Jean. The NYPD said no report was filed. One neighbor said Howard told him that he feared for his life.
Howard, who lost his wife to cancer several years ago, was known in the neighborhood for his strong faith. His pastor, Dr. Samuel James, said Howard was a leader in his church.
“He invested his life in helping others, especially those who are unfortunate,” said Dr. James.
Police records show Jean was charged with assault in January for allegedly hitting his mother. He is now facing murder and weapons charges.
Police said Howard was dropped off at Brookdale Hospital on Monday morning with multiple stab wounds. He was later pronounced dead.
Family and friends are planning funeral services for Howard.
