Marine Park residents concerned about lithium-ion battery plant in construction near homes

NineDot claims it got the property early in 2024 and had to go through finalizing things before discussing the project with the community. Cohen says safety is a priority for the site.

Brooklyn-based energy company NineDot is in the process of building a lithium-ion battery plant on Flatbush Avenue in Marine Park.

Marine Park residents Claudia Greco and Edward Rohrlich have lived in the area for 35 years and say the plant will back up against their home.

They say they got a letter in the mail last week inviting them to a "meet-and-greet" with energy company NineDot to discuss the plant.

“This was already after they had begun construction. None of us were notified until several days later," said Greco.

The plant will be along Flatbush Avenue in Marine Park.

“My house is worth a certain amount of money. What’s it gonna be worth in six or eight months once the real estate agents get an idea of what’s behind it? They may not be able to sell it," said Rohrlich.

NineDot co-founder Adam Cohen says questions and concerns are the goal behind the meet-and-greet.

“We welcome this conversation and we understand these concerns are legitimate and they're real," said Cohen.

Residents say they just wish it happened sooner.

“This meet-and-greet should have been held before they even thought about purchasing the property. They could have felt out the neighborhood," said Rohrlich.

NineDot claims it gotthe property early in 2024 and had to go through finalizing things before discussing the project with the community. Cohen says safety is a priority for the site.

“These sites are certified by the FDNY, and they have they have a set of standards and are all constantly monitored by experts. And if anything goes wrong, there's an emergency response plan that's been set up and the FDNY is on call," said Cohen.

Homeowners are also pushing for the project to be moved to a vacant site nearby. One of the questions they're hoping to answer at Tuesday's meet-and-greet.
