Three mass monkeypox vaccination sites opened Sunday across New York City to help fight the recent surge in cases.
Over 25,000 shots will be offered at the Science Skills Center High School in Brooklyn, I.S. 125 in Queens and the Bronx High School of Science.
Earlier this week, News 12 was told that approximately 26,000 doses of the monkeypox vaccine were delivered to New York City as part of phase 2b from the federal government and state.
Of those doses, 17,000 were allocated for public locations across the city, by appointments that opened up Friday. The remaining doses will be set aside for organizations that serve New Yorkers that are at higher risk and for cases that were found through the Health Department's contact tracing.
According to the New York City Department of Health, 839 New Yorkers have tested positive for the disease as of Friday.
Appointments for the mass vaccination sites are for first doses only, as the Health Department says it is prioritizing first vaccines.
Scientists discovered the first shot gives more protection than not having the vaccine at all.
The three vaccination sites are scheduled to continue serving doses next weekend.
Health experts suggest residents get tested for the monkey pox if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms, feel swollen lymph nodes or have rashes and blisters.
