May crime stats show jumps in overall crime; biggest rises in grand larceny, rape

Despite fewer murders this year than in 2021, every other major crime category has seen an increase in frequency this year.

Despite fewer murders this year than in 2021, every other major crime category has seen an increase in frequency this year.
Transit crimes have increased by 28 percent from 2021 to this year, and overall crime in New York City has increased by 27.8 percent.
Grand larceny has seen a huge increase with just under 2,900 incidents last year in May of 2021 jumping all the way up to 4,116 incidents in May of this year.
The NYPD has seized 3,080 guns so far this year. Shooting incidents have also declined by 31% this month in comparison to last year, according to the NYPD.
