Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York City Council Member Jumaanne Williams teamed up Thursday for a town hall meeting to discuss gun violence prevention with residents in East Flatbush.

Williams started the meeting at Tilden High School by asking people how many have lost a loved one to gun violence. Nearly half of the room stood up, with some audience members wearing orange in support of Gun Violence Awareness Month.

Mayor de Blasio said shootings are down nearly 25 percent in Brooklyn compared to last year, but said there is still any issue in the borough.

The mayor talked about combating gun violence by offering more after-school programs, summer jobs and trying to build a better relationship with police and youth. 

Mayor de Blasio said Thursday's town hall is just the beginning, and hopes to take some of the ideas discussed there and apply them in the borough.
