Mayor Bill de Blasio held a press conference Thursday to address the threat of potential rain and windstorms.
The mayor says the city learned a lesson following the devastation after Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
"The city is much safer, much more prepared today than where we stood three years ago," de Blasio says.
Experts say it's too early to tell if Hurricane Joaquin will hit the area, but a nor'easter is also expected to land in the region.
The mayor's office advised New Yorkers to make some preparations of their own in case of powerful storms.
He says residents should have stocked emergency kits at home. They should include extra batteries for flashlights and radios.
The city's Office of Emergency Management also released a brochure with more information on safety precautions.
