A memorial bike ride was held in Midwood on Sunday to honor the 14th cyclist killed in the borough this year.
Jose Alzorriz, 52, was killed two weeks ago when police say an 18-year-old driver sped through a red light and collided with another vehicle on Coney Island Avenue and Avenue L. The vehicle struck Alzorriz and knocked him off his bike.
Friends, advocacy groups and elected officials to remember a man they say put others before himself.
Those who knew Alzorriz say in the weeks following Hurricane Sandy, he funded school buses to bring volunteers to disaster areas all around New York City for more than six weeks. They also say he allowed an entire family to stay with him in his small apartment when they didn't have a place to live.
Transportation Alternatives says Coney Island Avenue has been identified as one of the most deadly roadways in Brooklyn.
Borough President Eric Adams said that the streets need to be safe for everyone.
"This is not a fight for bikers, this is a fight for people who need to share the streets," Adams said.
In response to Alzorriz's death, the Department of Transportation announced plans to paint non-protected bike lanes along the area.
Cyclists say they want protected bike lanes.
