Hundreds of Brooklyn residents honored their mothers Sunday with a reflective walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.
The fourth annual Brooklyn Bridge Mother's Day Walk is a way for people to discuss domestic violence.
"I didn't realize I was a survivor of domestic violence or never really had acknowledged it until I met this wonderful group of women," said Jaime Summers, of Queens.
The organization Milagros Day Worldwide started the event as a symbolic gesture of overcoming the odds.
Survivors of domestic violence at the event said that even though it's an uncomfortable topic, it's something that people should talk about every day.
"If we're really honoring our mothers then that means that we have to think about the gender inequality that exists in our society and how we can start to bring more awareness to the things we usually want to let go of," said Yvonne Chow, of Manhattan.
Several participants who spoke with News 12 Brooklyn say they have attended the event every year since it began.
