The MTA held a public hearing Thursday evening on the fate of the L train commuters who won't be able to ride the subway due to a long-term tunnel maintenance plan.

The MTA says an estimated 225,000 commuters travel from Brooklyn to Manhattan each day.

In an effort to ease the mind of commuters, the MTA has proposed two plans. The first plan involves shutting down the L train tunnel for 18 months while maintenance is performed. The second would have limited service for three years while one track remains open. 

The MTA will be holding another public meeting later this month. 

The agency says it is not planning on doing any closures until January 2019. It will be making its decision about which proposal to follow sometime in the coming months.

The maintenance is meant to repair damage caused by Superstorm Sandy.
