The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) says it is stepping up patrols on express buses to crack down on fare cheaters. The agency plans to add more than 60 uniformed agents to its Eagle Team. Members of the team cannot arrest people, but can issue tickets to anyone caught getting on a bus without paying. The MTA says fare evaders are cheating the agency out of up to $1 million per year.
