The MTA is reportedly set to increase various fares across the city since the base fare of $2 is staying put.According to the New York Times, the increases will affect unlimited weekly and monthly MetroCards, Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road fares. Tolls on the Port Authority's bridges and tunnels will also rise. The MTA says the increase is expected to be about 3.85 percent.Last week, Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D-N.Y.) announced that the MTA found more than $220 million in its budget. Because of that, Spitzer ordered that the base fare not be changed. The MTA's financial committee will meet next week to determine the specific increases. If approved, the changes will go into effect in 2008.
