The MTA is set to add cameras to a number of bus lines in Brooklyn on Monday Sept. 30 to increase penalties and serve more tickets for vehicles that block bus lanes.

The date marks the beginning of a 60-day warning period for drivers. The cameras will capture the license codes for cars impeding the way of the busses on the Brooklyn B82 SBS,B25, B6 SBS and B26 routes.

Summons for repeat offenders will start at $50 and increase to $250 for future violations.

According to the MTA, just 9% of drivers were repeat offenders after being ticketed once during those first 60 days. The MTA hopes the increased enforcement can help reduce the numbers even further.

The MTA also touts that when cameras are active, lane speeds increase by 5%, while accidents drop by 20%. It also lowers emissions for busses that must maneuver around parked cars.
