New moms now have a private place to pump while riding at Atlantic Terminal. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is unveiling a new pod at the Long Island Rail Road waiting area.
The MTA bought the lactation pod from a Vermont-based company named Mamava.
In the fall, a similar one costing $24,000 was installed at Penn Station. The pod at Atlantic Terminal was placed in the waiting area but did not eliminate seating for passengers.
The Mamava pod has seating, shelves, mirrors and lighting to make it a comfortable and private place to breastfeed. The only way moms can get in is by asking the attendant to unlock it.
It can also fit more than one person at a time. A note inside the pod mentions that it is only for breastfeeding and anyone looking to change their child's diaper should do it in the bathroom.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams says many new moms have commented that breastfeeding their children in public can sometimes be a stressful situation and that this will alleviate that.
With the success of these pods, the MTA is exploring the idea of installing pods at other LIRR stations.
