The Metropolitan Transportation Authority introduced a plan to stop people from riding outside train cars as the rise of subway surfing claimed the lives of several teens throughout the city.

The MTA says that along with the NYPD, they have stopped nearly 1,000 people riding outside of train cars in 2022. Those incidents have doubled in 2023 compared to the same time last year, and it's only March.

With social media heavily influencing the decision for teens to subway surf, the MTA says they are working with social media companies to take hundreds of videos down.

As peer pressure also contributes to the rise in surfing, New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks plans to partner with the MTA to create a campaign geared toward educating students at public schools about the dangers of riding outside the trains.

The NYPD will now monitor top surfing locations to ensure these people are riding the train safely.

Back in 2021, the MTA launched a Track Trespassing Task Force, which they say has helped minimize trespassing incidents by 30% in 2023 compared to 2022.
