A resident of Fort Independent Houses told News 12 that his home has unsanitary living conditions following two hot water pipe bursts that took place just a month apart from each other.
Jessica Sosa says both incidents occurred in the middle of the night. The first one happened in her youngest daughter’s room in January.
"I was scared for their life. My oldest got burned on her feet. She had to walk through the burning water to go get her 10-year-old sister to run out of the apartment,” she said.
The last pipe burst occurred in her living room when her daughters were home alone.
"There was just steam everywhere, and water everywhere. The girls were in the hallway hyperventilating,” said Sosa.
Ever since then, Sosa says she has had to deal with a rusted radiator, unplastered walls and dirt on the floors.
"I was left with a black floor, it looked muddy and nasty,” she said.
Sosa says she has hit a dead end after reaching out to the building’s management office and putting in various tickets for the repairs.
"I don’t even feel safe going downstairs to speak to our management. Our housing assistants are supposed to be our advocates they’re supposed to be here to help us,” she said. "They need to do the follow up on the repairs and actually do them. A lot of times, I take off of work and nobody even comes to do an assessment."
NYCHA released a statement to News 12: “An assessment of the repairs needed at this apartment is scheduled for this week and property management staff will continue to work with the resident to ensure they are completed.”
