#N12BK: Cash or credit
Do you pay cash or credit?
There’s a growing trend of cashless restaurants that only accept card or e-payments like Apple Pay.
Some city councilmen would like to change that trend.
Councilman Ritchie Torres of the Bronx is introducing a bill that would force restaurants and other establishments to accept cash.
Torres argues places that don’t accept cash pose a challenge to low-income people who might not have access to credit cards, bank accounts or smartphones with apple pay credibility.
Violators would face fines of up to $250 for the first offense and up to $500 for additional violations.
The bill was co-sponsored by Councilman Chaim Deutsch and Rafael Espinal of Brooklyn and Keith Powers of Manhattan.
The bill would have to be passed by a City Council vote before being put into effect.
How do you feel about restaurants going cashless?
