A home care aide is scheduled to face a judge for the first time today after Nassau County police accused her of swiping a credit card from a 90-year-old woman in her care and racking up $30,000 in charges over six months.
Nassau County police arrested Sarika Mangru, 48, yesterday.
The Jamaica, Queens resident was caring for the senior at her home in North Woodmere when she was making the unauthorized transactions between June 2024 and January 2025, according to officials.
Nassau County police charged Mangru with one count of third-degree grand larceny, two counts of fourth-degree grand larceny, identity theft and third-degree unlawful possession of a personal identification.
The type of situation, unfortunately is not uncommon. Older Americans lose an estimated $28 billion annually to elder financial exploitation, according to the National Council on Aging. More than 70% of that is done by someone the victim knows, like family, friends, or a caregiver.
Mangru is scheduled to be arraigned later this morning at First District Court in Hempstead.
