Two people were killed and multiple people were injured in two separate crashes this weekend on the Long Island Expressway.
A wrong-way crash in East Hills shut down the L.I.E. for several hours and resulted in multiple injuries. It happened just before 7 a.m. between exits 36 and 38.
That section was closed off to traffic in both directions for nearly two hours.
"Debris everywhere. All kinds of debris, car parts. It was pretty bad," said an eyewitness.
A Hempstead man is facing charges in that crash after police say he was driving while intoxicated.
According to detectives, Jorge Arias Reyes was driving westbound in the eastbound lane when he hit a Toyota.
Both Reyes and the driver of the Toyota were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Police say the 49-year-old was also involved in an accident near Exit 41.
Authorities say the driver of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt was ejected from the vehicle. The driver and a passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.
