A natural hair salon in Bedford–Stuyvesant reopened for business, with safety measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Sabine Bellevue and Nicole Dickson have been styling hair at Sabine's Hallway Natural Hair Salon for more than a decade.
It's a salon that's been opened for 14 years and is dedicated to maintaining natural hair.
"Sabine's Hallway offers natural hair care as well as education on their hair care. We do have an esthetician on hand, and we do offer Yoni steaming, so it's not just about hair. We take it to another level," says Bellevue.
The salon is back open after being closed for four months due to COVID-19, a closure that Bellevue says took a toll on the business.
"We were not being able to service anyone and not taking any income in, so it was very hard for us," she says.
While the hairstylists say they were down about the salon being closed, they say they used that time to channel their feelings into helping the community.
They got started on a short film titled, 'Culture and Beauty Beyond COVID-19,' as a way to celebrate their Caribbean culture.
"It's just the great contributions that our Caribbean people have contributed to New York, as well as just what can people do as far as through the pandemic as well to better themselves," Bellevue says.
Now that the salon has reopened, some new safety measures include, only one client being allowed in the salon at a time and sanitizing the salon regularly.
As the stylists continue to welcome clients back, they say they are now looking towards the future.
"As in every crisis that comes, there are opportunities, so Sabine's Hallway is taking this opportunity to move the business to another level. I'm not going to divulge too much. Stay tuned and see what our future holds for us, but I can tell you it's going to be big," Dickson says.
