A fire at a multistory apartment building in Bay Ridge sent residents rushing out into the cold and left four people hurt, including two firefighters.
The fire broke out around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday inside the building on Colonial Road. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after reports of a fire on the third floor.
Cellphone video from the scene shows a ladder stretched to the top of the building as firefighters worked. At one point, someone was wheeled to an ambulance while residents stood on the sidewalk, watching and waiting as crews put the fire out.
Officials say four people were injured. One resident is in critical condition. Another resident and two firefighters suffered minor injuries.
The fire was brought under control in just under an hour. Investigators are still determining a cause.
Ali, who has lived in the building for 12 years, said he was awoken by firefighters.
“They started knocking the doors. Telling everybody to get out - there's a fire- everybody panicked. I had my grandmother. She’s on medication. The whole building came outside -- a lot of firefighters. We had no idea what happened,” Ali said.
The American Red Cross says it has registered five households — nine adults and two children — for emergency assistance, including temporary lodging.
