Construction has begun on a new building in downtown Brooklyn that will be limited to artists and the homeless. The building on Schermerhorn Street is being built by a partnership between the Actor?s Fund of America and Common Ground. Sixty percent of the 217-units in the Schermerhorn House will go to homeless, the other forty percent will go to low-income artists and entertainers. The building is designed to be permanent housing for those who qualify. The building will also have a 200 seat black-box theater that will be open to the public. People will be able to take classes or see a performance.
