With more than 150,000 catch basins spread across New York City, the Department of Environmental Protection is turning to residents for help keeping them clear.
Through its “Adopt-a-Catch Basin” program, the agency is asking New Yorkers to take responsibility for the storm drains on their block—especially before and during storms. Volunteers receive a free kit that includes gloves, a rake and a reflective vest.
DEP Commissioner Rohit Aggarwala said the most important part is being ready when it counts.
“If you keep an eye on it and it happens to be covered with leaves or garbage or what have you, you just clean it,” he said. “The most important thing is being willing during that storm, as long as it's safe, to go out there, because that's the moment that your neighborhood needs you the most."
DEP trucks still clean the inside of the basins, but the agency says local involvement can make a big difference in reducing street flooding.
