The MTA says new fare gates are being installed as a pilot to the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center Station at the Fourth Avenue entrance.

News 12 crews observed caution tape closing off the entrance for repairs Tuesday evening.

It comes after an MTA announcement earlier this year, saying it plans to test different versions of the gates at stations across the city.

Commuters like Kori Trumpet say she's skeptical.

“So I don't think there's a point and I feel like it's just going to cause more damage with people breaking the glass," said Trumpet.

A report from the Citizens Budget Commission analyzing MTA data estimates that last year, the city lost about $1 billion to fare evasion.

Other commuters like Carol Gordon think it's worth a shot.

“But I think anything that they can do to deter it, I think they should," said Gordon.

The MTA says by the end of 2029, 150 stations will have the gates.
