Millions of tenants across the country could be forced to leave their homes as the federal eviction ban was not extended.
The eviction moratorium had been protecting renters impacted by the pandemic from being evicted for not paying rent.
New Yorkers still have some time as Gov. Andrew Cuomo extended the eviction ban until Aug. 31.
President Joe Biden called on Congress to extend the moratorium until the end of the year, but they didn’t act before going into a seven-week recess.
Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal Bowman joined other members of Congress to attempt to extend the eviction ban.
Rep. Yvette Clarke is calling on Congress to reconvene for a vote to extend the moratorium and for a bill to be passed that would protect them.
Clarke said in a statement “Housing is a human right…We must extend the national eviction moratorium until at least Dec. 31.”
The end of the eviction ban could affect an estimated 11.4 million people nationwide who are behind on rent.
The local housing organization, Crown Heights Tenant Union, says the expiration of the federal moratorium is a crime.
They say they will be rallying outside Gov. Cuomo’s Manhattan office Wednesday to fight to extend the New York ban on evictions.
