Nixzmary Brown?s mother was convicted of manslaughter in the first degree on Friday afternoon for the death of her daughter.
Nixzaliz Santiago was accused of standing by as her 7-year-old daughter was beaten to death by her stepfather, Cesar Rodriguez.
Santiago was also convicted of unlawful imprisonment, endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of assault for the injuries to Nixzmary?s ankle and forehead.
Jurors found her not guilty on the charge of murder in the second degree.
Rodriguez was convicted of manslaughter in March and is serving 29 years in prison for the death and malnourishment of Nixzmary in January of 2006. Investigators say he beat Nixzmary fatally as punishment after the young girl stole a yogurt from the refrigerator.
Evidence used in the trial included photos of the crime scene from the room where Nixzmary was bound to a chair, starved and forced to use a litter box as a toilet. The murder of Nixzmary prompted New York City to reform its child welfare system.
