The NJDOT is hoping to make driving in Bridgewater safer in an area they say has a high crash rate.
Just 2 days ago there was a deadly crash on 22 near where the NJDOT is proposing this project.
The project was shown during a town council meeting at the end of May.
The Route 202/206 and Route 22 Interchange Concept Development project is located from Commons Way to the acceleration lane of the Somerville circle on 202 and east on 22 over to Grove Street.
In recent years, the NJDOT says Route 22 and 202 within the project area have a higher crash rate than the statewide average.
This NJDOT Project is in the 2nd phase out of 5. The next steps would be preliminary engineering, final design and then construction.
The proposal is complex but it provides a physical separation between through and weaving movement, adding a third lane, and widening a bridge, among other improvements.
The NJDOT anticipates construction to begin in the summer of 2030 and completed in 2033.
In the meantime, they will continue to conduct studies and ask the public for input.
