NYC Emergency Management has issued a warning about high surf and high-risk rip currents through this weekend.
The agency says those heading to a beach should not swim without a lifeguard on duty or anywhere they see red flags.
Those who find themselves in a rip current should relax and swim parallel to shore to escape it, according to the agency.
If the current cannot be escaped, swimmers are advised to face the shore, yell and wave for help.
